Sankewitahasuwakon is the First Nations Health and Wellness Transformation Collaborative in New Brunswick. The three Tribal Councils in New Brunswick (Mawiw Inc., Northshore Mi’kmaq Tribal Council, Wolastoqey Tribal Council Inc.) are working collectively to further Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqey health priorities through the creation of a New Brunswick First Nations health entity, Sankewitahasuwakon.
Sankewitahasuwakon is recognized by the 15 Chiefs of New Brunswick as a collaborative, unified voice to advocate on First Nations health matters. The Sankewitahasuwakon team consists of Tribal Council representatives, an executive director, and executive assistant which operate under the direction of an advisory committee that includes the 15 First Nation health directors in New Brunswick, youth, and elders.
Sankewitahasuwakon works with First Nation communities, health organizations, the province of New Brunswick and Canada to create a healthcare system that meets the needs of First Nations in New Brunswick. For this reason, Sankewitahasuwakon serves as an important touchpoint to provide a comprehensive perspective on First Nations health and wellness in New Brunswick.
